Marta Madelaine Photography bio picture

thanks for stopping by

Playful. Fresh. Contemporary. Casual - that's me and that's Marta Madelaine. I am a contemporary portrait and wedding photographer and artist in Vancouver, BC. Thanks for visiting my blog - the place where you can see some of my work and creative explorations from client sessions, our travels and sometimes read about other ideas that inspire me, like good food and design. Have a look to see what I've been up to lately and say hello if you'd like. And if you are thinking of commissioning your own one-of-a-kind images or would like to know more about my photography sessions send me a note. I'd love to hear from you.

Why so blue? It's the colour of water and sky and of big open spaces that let the mind wander to places where new ideas are born. Blue is the colour I'm enjoying right now.

Lesley from Adley Studio Photography

she is beautiful //she is creative //  she is courageous // she is passionate // she is a photographer // she is a friend

Thank you Lesley for coming to meet me, last minute, with a trunk full of clothes ready to model like a pro so we could capture the last of the fall leaves before the wind blew them all away ……..  the other four days that week were filled with sunshine. Typical Vancouver greeted us with clouds on this Friday afternoon in October, but we made the best of it.

Lesley is also a photographer. Check out her blog – Adley Studio Photography – for new and exciting things she’s doing with her business in January :)

Tera, Andrew, Madden & Kolten /// Surrey Family Photography

I know I promised photos of Argentina, but first one more Vancouver fall session with a beautiful family. Last week I headed out to Surrey’s Stewart Farmhouse to photograph  Tera and Andrew and their two sons. Tera got in touch with me back in September about booking a family session, but the first available time we could set was in November. The Saturday we planned the session our Vancouver rainstorms were in full force and there was no way we were going to take two little boys into the rain (unless of course big mud puddles were going to be part of the scenery, which could be fun too I suppose). On November 11th the weather improved and we eagerly took advantage of the day. And despite the strong winds that blew through the weeks prior, we even lucked out to still capture some fall colors in the orchard.

Tera and Andrew and the boys were awesome to photograph and natural models. Don’t they look gorgeous!? Little Madden had a close encounter with a puddle at the beginning, but took it in stride and we continued on exploring the property :)

Tera and Andrew: here’s a selection of some of my favourites photos from our session. Thanks so much for a great visit to the farmhouse; I will be in touch soon with a slide show of all your images.

This one is one of my absolute favourites – Kolten is just starting to walk and he loved all the apples on the ground insisting on either trying to bite them or chase them down the hill. This image would make for an awesome canvas I think.

Back from vacation … photos coming soon!

Hello friends. I’m back from our amazing trip to Argentina and have lots of photo goodness to share with you all. All of August and September were very, very busy with lots of new images taken on various trips in B.C and many still waiting to be blogged. Then there is Argentina, which I think will need a whole series of posts since there is so much to share. What an amazing country and people … and the scenery breathtaking! Can’t wait to go through all the images just as soon we fix some technical issues since I’m suffering from a serious lack of hard drive space.

I promise I’ll be posting more photos, albums, Christmas cards and storyboards soon :)

I leave you with a portrait of my photographer friend Lesley. Isn’t she beautiful!? We sneaked out for a last minute photo session just hours before I left on vacation so we could take advantage of the beautiful fall leaves before the wind blew them all away. Lesley and I are heading over to the Sunshine Coast to photograph a wedding this Saturday. Everyone cross your fingers for a sunny Halloween day!

Suzy + Ed + Kids /// North Vancouver Family Photography

Suzy and Ed love the outdoors. Even though they live on the downtown side of the bridge, they often come over the North Vancouver to enjoy all the fantastic trails and parks with their kids. Last weekend I met them at Lynn Headwaters Park – one of their favourites – for a casual family portrait session.

Suzy contacted me after seeing some images from Sue and Tom’s family session earlier this summer. They really liked the outdoor location and feel of the images and wanted something similar for their young family.

This was my first time taking pictures of children I never met before so I was very nervous about our session. I love kids and hoped that I could convince Matti that the photo adventure would be fun. That said, my idea of fun may be a little different than a 3 year old’s ;) I was in luck. Matti was the sweetest little boy and we had a great time exploring the canyon and forest − I even got a hug when we met! Melts my heart :) It just doesn’t get any better than that for a first meeting.

Daniela + Richie /// Vancouver Engagement Photography

What a fun time I had with Daniela and Richie. A perfect evening filled with sunshine and a gorgeous couple. We started our photo shoot in Daniela and Richie’s Yaletown neighborhood, taking advantage of the water views and the well-known Roundhouse wall of glass doors. Then on to Stanley Park just before sunset.

Vancouver is very special to Daniela and Richie not just because the city is now their home, but because this is where they met. Richie’s love of video games brought him to Vancouver about 5 years ago from Boston, MA, while Daniela grew up in Brazil and has been in Vancouver for just a few years. She is one of the most fashionable women I know and completely blows me away with her drive and ambition. Daniela has continued her love of running since moving the the West Coast and has already run a marathon earlier this year and will be doing another this October.

Danila and Richie will be getting married this spring. The exact location is still to be determined, but I know they are thinking of some exciting locales on the East Coast! Good luck with all the wedding planning :)

When we were planning our outing Daniela specifically requested that we go somewhere in the park with great views, but little traffic. Something a little different than the usual English Bay scenery.

I saved my favorite for last. At almost the very end of our shoot, the sun was quickly disappearing over the horizon and cast the most beautiful orange light. The trees and grass looked on fire in this light!

Thank you Daniela and Richie for hanging out with me and my camera – I can’t wait to find out what destination you choose for your wedding!

Little Miss S. /// Vancouver Newborn Photorgraphy

With lots of love and joy, this beautiful little blessing was welcomed by her parents, grandparents, and two older siblings into their family this past spring. Robert and Amy – Thank you for your hospitality − Szymon and I were so glad to see you and to finally meet your three children in May. We hope you will visit us on the West Coast sometime.

Since our mini photo session was kind of impromptu and the older two had a full day of daycare activities they couldn’t be home to join their sister for the  photos. Next time :)

Gabby + Chris + kids /// Maple Ridge Family Photography

August is my favorite month of the summer. All the flowers are finally lush with color and the trees full of leaves. Days are still pretty long with lots of sunshine and a bounty of yummy harvest goodies awaits. Last Saturday – on one of those perfect August days – I spent time with good friends Gabby and Chris and their two little ones celebrating their daughter’s 1st birthday with a family photo session. Gabby and Chris chose an extra special place for the session – the same spot where they exchanged their wedding vows 4 years ago!

We had a great time shooting in the stunning gardens at the Pitt Meadows FarmHouse Lifestyle Country Retreat. Thanks for letting me share in this special day for your family. I absolutely adore your two little treasures and their beautiful smiles. They are full of curiosity and are growing like weeds … don’t you wish just a little that you could keep them this small for a while longer?  :)

Sue, Tom, Katie, Lauren & Robyn /// North Vancouver Family Portraits

I met Katie in my first semester back in university, shortly after taking a leap of faith and moving from Toronto to Vancouver to return back to school. Katie and I met while we were both studying business at Capilano College with the intent that we would both transfer to the Business Administration program at Simon Fraser University. At the time I wasn’t sure what I would do with the business degree yet, but Katie had her heart set on becoming an executive for a creative and interesting company. A few years, an accounting course, and a few group projects later, we both graduated from the Communications program instead!

As our friendship grew Katie introduced me to her family and I got to know her mom and dad and her twin sisters, Robyn and Lauren. Although Katie and her sisters have all graduated from school and moved out into their own apartments, last Saturday the family came together at their home in North Vancouver for a long overdue portrait session. Last winter they also welcomed a new canine addition to their home. Jesse is a Maltese poodle and is irresistibly cute. He was such a good sport for all the photos we took and patiently sat still as we shot picture after picture in the hot summer sun.

Thank you for welcoming me to your home Sue and Tom. Here’s a few photos from our session.

There is a small wood shed in the corner of the family’s back yard where the girls use to play when they were little. The sun cast a beautiful shadow from the nearby tree on Saturday afternoon, making it a perfect location for a few individual portraits.

We also headed out to the Lynn Canyon Park for some more photos.

Read all about it … Contemporary Lifestyle Portraiture and Wedding Photography

Welcome to Marta Madelaine Photography: the website that reads like a blog. Thank you for visiting :)

Today marks a new beginning as this blog finally emerges from the darkness of many started and not always finished files on my computer’s hard drive into the light of the web for others to read.  It is a new beginning for my creative explorations and a new adventure into what I hope know will be an exciting time ahead. This blog will above all be a place where I will share my photographic adventures with you. It will also be about creativity and exploration in other mediums, and probably a little about other unrelated, but fabulous things I see and hear about and can’t resist sharing with everyone that may read my ramblings.

So what inspired this new venture you may ask? Those who have known me for a while probably know that at one point in time I had hung up my creative hat to pursue other opportunities that I needed to explore. But, even though I learned new skills and had a chance to try many interesting projects, somehow by way of small and big decisions I would end right back at it – creating, designing, and capturing what my eyes would see around me. At the same time I started spending more time in front of my computer virtually discovering the work of amazing photographers, designers and artists via their own blogs.  With every new post I read a little flame of inspiration and belief would light deep in my soul pushing me to get back to doing what I think I was put on this planet to do … to be creative, to tell visual stories about people and places. The blogs I’ve spent so much time reading are a big reason I am sitting here today in front of my computer on an incredibly hot and humid evening writing this post. Their authors’ fearlessness and passion to follow their dreams, to be photographers and artists and to keep working on their craft and sharing the experience with people like me, inspired me to do the same.  To stop waiting for the right time or for enough knowledge and skills, and just dive in and see where life takes me.

But the most important reason for why this blog is seeing the light of day is my husband. I am blessed to have met a wonderful man who not only shares in my many interests, photography included, but also supports my many and all sometimes wacky ideas. Without his patience and encouragement this new endeavor would still be hiding in those dark files on my hard drive! And to all my great friends who let me take their photos whenever I asked, I am forever grateful for your confidence in me and your support.

At this point I should say that although I am very excited about all the photos and ideas I will be sharing on this blog, journaling and writing from the heart for that matter, is a new and somewhat scary proposition for me. You see I have always seen myself as a visual storyteller first and so writing is a new challenge I am taking on here. Second, I have a million new ideas every day that I think would be great projects and blog posts, but time doesn’t always allow to get them all done.  So this is a disclaimer to say that I will try and work hard to post new things often, but from time to time you might see an apology note or two about my absence from the blog. But present and future clients do not fear as session photos are exempt from this clause :)

Can’t start a blog about photography without a picture. That would just be crazy! So here’s a photo from one of my most favorite places on earth: Iceland.

2009/08/24 - 9:30 PM Karin - Congrats on starting your blog! Looks great!

2009/09/02 - 1:09 PM Erin - I am so excited to see where this website and your passion take you! I love it already. =)
